The iglidur®-car

Let me re-cap on exactly what iglidur is:

This is our iglidur®-car in front of the Ars Electronica Center – Linz.

Our iglidur®-car is a normal compact vehicle yet modified by us. First of all, we painted it in orange and gave it the official igus® style. With the outside ready to shine, we focused on the inner aspects. The Univerity of Applied Science of Cologne in cooperation with igus® employees and the German Technical Inspection Association (TÜV), had a closer look and dismantled the iglidur®-car. Based on the general question “How can they be replaced best?”, a total of 56 igus® bearings were exchanged in the following areas:

  • Seat adjustment
  • Brake pedal
  • Gearshift
  • Hand brake
  • Window lifter
  • Convertible roof pivot points
  • Windscreen wiper mechanics
  • Throttle valves
  • Alternator

Transformation of the iglidur®-car (Arrow indicates bearing): Top left – Window lifter, Top right – Alternator, Bottom left – Hand brake, Bottom right – Gear selector

All in all, the car has travelled more than 50.000 km from Cologne around the world: India, China, South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Brazil, Alaska and USA.

The iglidur®-car has seen quite a bit.

Now it’s time to conquer Europe starting in Austria!

Let’s see what happens,

Karl

The tour schedule

The image below presents the schedule of “iglidur® on tour” through Europe.

These countries will be visit within the next 6 months.

The tour is separated into two parts by the Christmas holidays and new years eve. In 2014, we will begin the tour in Austria and continue to the United Kingdom by driving through Nederland’s and Belgium. We will then spend nearly 3 weeks in France and continue onto Switzerland until we celebrate the new year. 2015 will start cold and snowy because we are going to drive to North Europe – Norway and Sweden. After this the drive will continue south from Poland over Hungary to Turkey. Finally, we will finish with South Europe by having a look around Italy, Spain and Portugal.

Puuh…This is going to be rough and those are just the main stops. Nevertheless, we are curious and excited about the things we will see, experience and discover. Equipped with a camera, dry-tech®-box and enough fuel, we are on our way!

Introducing the team for Europe

Hey!

While we are on the road to visit some customers, I would like to introduce my team mates:

The crew of iglidur® on tour from left to right: Sandor, myself and Nils

Nils is 19 years old, has a vocational diploma in media design and loves music and photography. Therefore, I have chosen him to assist me by taking photos. Furthermore, he has experience in filming and thus, will have control about GoPro and camera.

Sandor is 19 years old as well, loves to travel and to discover foreign countries. With his license in the pocket he is responsible for our iglidur®-car and ready to take us around Europe safely.

Now it is clear who we are but where do we go?

Find out next time,

Karl

Picture of the day- Chicago!

The iglidur® car is loving its long stay in Chicago! Today the car drove over to see the Chicago Theatre which is an emblem of the city located in the theatre district. It opened in 1921 as the flagship theatre for the Balaban and Katz theatre corporation. Today the theatre is part of the National Register of Historic Places and hosts a variety of different arts including comedy, films, stage plays, speeches and magic shows.

Across Lowa

From Minneapolis, the car headed south to Iowa a state very much known for their corn. Lowa is often referred to as “America’s Heartland,” and borders the Mississippi River.

In the 2nd half of the 20th century, Iowa’s agricultural economy expanded into a wide range of manufacturing, processing and financial industries, and anywhere with a large range of industries is a great place for igus to be!

We had time to stop at a few of our Iowan customers, such as one manufacturer of packaging equipment that uses igus’s DryLin R linear bearings and iglide j plain bearings in their machinery.

Used in many areas of packaging, including food and drug production plants, igus products are extraordinarily safe and long-lasting, as they are not affected by crumbs, sugar, or other material in these types of facilities. igus products also are not reliant on grease, and with no grease, there is no threat of contamination from bearings!

While in Iowa, the car took a drive to the Original Field of Dreams, a baseball field and pop-culture tourist attraction, featured in the movie “Field of Dreams.” Upon pulling in the long dirt driveway, the car was greeted by the farm’s owner Don Lansing.

With his Field of Dreams baseball cap on, Mr. Lansing told the story of the day Hollywood knocked on his door 25 years ago, interested in filming a movie on his land. After the movie came out, people from all over flocked to his field, making their way from as far as Eastern Europe and Japan to walk on this beloved field.

Before passing through Iowa, a stop at the Mississippi River was in order. The chief drainage system for the entire United States, the Mississippi flows for 2,340 miles across the country, making it the 4th longest river in the world.

Next stop from Iowa is north to Milwaukee!
